What an Asian wedding needs from a marquee
- ✓Capacity for seated guests at round tables, not standing. Five hundred people eating a three-course dinner need far more floor than five hundred at a drinks reception, plus room for the stage, the dance floor and the service aisles.
- ✓A stage or mandap area with its own power, and the height to take a backdrop. Tell the company early if you are bringing a decorator.
- ✓A catering tent or service area if food is cooked live, with the caterer's gas and fire rules agreed between them and the marquee company.
- ✓Hard flooring under carpet. Heels, dancing and a wet week all argue against grass.
- ✓Linings, drapes and lighting that take colour, since most Asian weddings are styled in a palette rather than plain white.
- ✓Heating for autumn and winter dates, ventilation for summer, and toilets, a generator, parking and access for the caterer's van.
- ✓Whether the site needs the council's permission: large structures, noise late in the evening and a road closure for the baraat are the usual triggers.
Questions to ask before you book
- Are setup and takedown included, and how many days does each need on either side of the wedding?
- What is the structure rated for in wind and rain, and what happens if the forecast turns?
- Is the quote per guest or per structure, and what is excluded: furniture, lighting, power, flooring, toilets?
- Is the company insured, and can you see a marquee they currently have up before you decide?
- Have they done Asian weddings before: a stage, live cooking, a baraat arrival, guests well past midnight?
