Preloved Walima Outfits

The walima is the reception hosted by the groom's family after the marriage, and it is traditionally the lighter of the two looks. Where a baraat or main wedding outfit tends towards deep reds and heavy work, walima outfits lean to pastels, golds, champagnes, ivories and softer silhouettes. It is usually the bride's second major outfit, and the one most often bought preloved, because it carries less of the emotional weight of the wedding-day piece.

A preloved walima lehenga or gown typically sells between £150 and £600, against £800 to £3,000 new. Lighter walima pieces, including saree and anarkali-style options, often sit between £80 and £250. Because these are worn once and are less likely to be kept for sentimental reasons than the wedding-day outfit, the supply is good and the condition is usually excellent.

Pastels and metallics dominate: champagne, ivory, dusty rose, mint, powder blue, lilac and gold. The convention is that the walima look is softer and lighter than the wedding day, which is why so many brides go pale. There is no rule against colour, and deep emeralds and midnight blues are increasingly common, but avoiding the deep bridal reds of the main day is the general instinct.

Six to eight weeks is comfortable. That allows for postage, a dry clean, and two tailor fittings, which matters more for a walima piece than most because it is usually fitted closely. If you are buying after the wedding date is set but before the wedding week, remember that many brides lose or gain a little in the run-up, so leave the final fitting as late as you sensibly can.

It is one of the most common preloved purchases on the site. The outfit is worn for a single evening, usually indoors and seated, and comes out of the wardrobe in near-perfect condition.
